Selecting Appropriate Media for Decoupage

Hi there :)

I'm planning on decoupaging a ceramic coffee mug for my friend as a birthday gift. My main concern is using a sealer.

Do I need to use Krylon Crystal Clear Spray or would Mod Podge work fine (and be safe for contact with the lips)?

Also, do you suppose using normal acrylic paint or a special kind of paint? I'm very new to arts and crafts (and DIY projects in general), so please excuse my inexperience :)
