Sealing Salt Dough Ornaments

Take care when sealing salt dough ornaments because salt dissolves in water.

Hi, I'm looking for a recipe for a water-base sealer, using Elmer's glue and water to seal salt dough ornaments. If you know, please let me know ASAP.

Thank you,
Wendy

Bread Dough Holly Leaf.jpgHi Wendy,

I'm afraid any water-based sealer would dissolve the salt in your dough and destroy the ornament. My suggestion is to make a few scraps or use an ornament that didn't come out too well to test on.

I frequently use Krylon Crystal Clear spray to seal a water-based product and protect it before applying (water-based) Mod Podge or Elmer's Glue-All. That works really well for decoupage. I think it might work for your project.

Bread Dough Candy Canes.jpgFor next Christmas – did you know that bread-based dough is just as safe, easy to make and work with as salt-based dough? I have Bread-Based Dough Ornaments that my young son and I made together over thirty years ago. They still go up on our tree every year – cute as the day they were made. We sealed them with Mod Podge.

Best regards,
Eileen
