This is Quite a Yarn

Finding YarnOne of the most frequent questions I get is from people looking for yarn at wholesale. If you knit or crochet for profit, it becomes critical to your bottom line. Here is my main article on Saving Money on Yarn.

Please add to this discussion thread especially if you’ve found some new sources for affordable yarn.

Sheva asked …
I crochet and sell hats. I focus on yarn companies such as Malabrigo, Ozark Hand Spun and Noro of Japan (to name a few).

How can I get wholesale prices or discounted prices without having to buy a truck load?

I am a one woman show and will not be hiring anyone to make hats for me. My hats are in one gallery and a Boutique in Austin, Texas, where I live.

I need my supplies to be cheaper so that I can expand my business.

I do not use Lion Brand or Red Heart. I use only natural fiber yarns, luxury yarns and hand spun/organic fibers. These are pricey to begin with, so selling hats while buying retail is crazy, I know.

One more thing, thank you so much for your site. Your info is awesome and easy to follow.

Pam asked …
I am looking for a yarn distributor for a federal prison. They use Dick Blick and Herschners now but they are not that great. Do you have suggestions?

Fran asked …
I am looking for Red Heart yarn -- yarn name "Hunny" - yarn content nylon and polyester, color 3832 Blue Boy. Red Heart Company advised they no longer produce this yarn. Do you have any of this out of production yarn?

If not, can you advise what company/store may have this yarn.

Thank you.

This thread (pun intended) will continue Monday with some answers.

  1. I'm so glad you at least admitted it was a pun from the first tug...

This is a very good question though, especially for those who don't have a storefront business...cannot wait to see your advice!

  2. It's a tough question and the answer changes as wholesalers come and go.

Maybe you'll have sources to add to the discussion, June. So please come back Monday as this thread unwinds. Gotcha again ;-)
