Designing and Making Your Own Jewelry

Beaded JewelryHello, my name is Karen and I am interested in designing and making my own jewelry.

Are there any kits I could get, so that I can get started?

This is something I really want to do. If you could please contact me and explain to me what I need to do to get the ball rolling, I would greatly appreciate your time.

Thanks!!
Karen

Hi Karen,

I assume you want to make a business of this, but I’m not sure since you didn’t say. In any case, I hope the information below helps you “get the ball rolling”.

Here’s a response I wrote to another reader on How to Get Your Jewelry Business Started.

You don’t mention what type of jewelry you want to design/make. There are so many different types for the handcrafter that I hardly know where to begin.

You can do Beaded Jewelry, PMC Jewelry, Wire-Sculpted Jewelry, Dichroic Glass Pendants, Polymer Clay Pendants and Charms…and on and on…

As for kits, they’re good for learning, but don’t think you can sell Crafts Made from Kits, unless you can add some unique little twists.

I learned Wire Sculpting from a kit by Preston Reuther. Preston has since retired, but here is an article he wrote for us on How to Start Your Craft Business Right.

After looking at some of this information, please write again with more detail on your experience and what type of jewelry you desire to design.

Regards,
Eileen

  1. Very good advice Eileen, I'd also suggest that she devise a good business plan, whether she goes to the bank or not (for a business loan), having one, and updating it regularly is a great way to make sure you are on the path you really want to be!
