My birth mother was in my life for the first 24 years. With a few years of overlap when I had them both, my second mom – my mother-in-law – was in my life for the last 45 years.Mom #2 passed away at age 93 this April. I took a few mementos of her jewelry; focusing on ones I recalled her wearing or ones we had given her.
Rather than stashing them away to tarnish and gather dust, I wanted to combine several charms into one necklace to honor her.
It didn’t work out as planned because the pieces were just too disparate: an enameled Pisanki egg pendant, a lovely little cameo in beige and white, and a somewhat larger magnifying glass pendant in bright gold. Then I recalled that I had tucked away jewelry from my mother and perhaps I might find a suitable piece of hers to add.
I found the perfect one: a small enamel articulated fish charm in the same colors as the Pisanki egg. Obviously this combination was meant to be!The religious theme of the Blue Moon triple charm with wing, cross and Roman coin just seemed the right complement and serves to un-balance the design. Lol. I like the way the wing curves toward the charms left me by the two most influential women in my life.
Have you done anything special with your heirloom jewelry?

I have my grandmother's jewelry in a box gathering dust. Nothing fantastic, just mostly costume jewelry but jewelry i can remember her wearing. And i can remember as a little girl her letting me sit on her bed and 'go thru ' her jewelry box. She wore jewelry a lot larger than i like especially big pins and big earrings. I plan on somehow turning them into something i would wear. I love the way they make me think of her just like the smell of oil of olay and sand and sable perfume. :)
That's sweet, Deb.
I wore the necklace today and, as I fingered the charms, I too remembered certain smells - Chanel #5 and fresh-baked babka. lol.

Thanks, Maria. I appreciate the free ads ;-)
Your momento charm necklace came out beautiful Eileen. I have gathered up my moms jewelry and will do something like this. I did make a charm bracelet in memory of her and will send a picture for you to see. Keep on creating for us. Love your site.
Thank you, Shaaron. I'd look forward to seeing yours too.
I love this idea! I once took some crystals from an old necklace of my grandma's and made a bracelet out of it. I really cherish it.
I love this design too. Very nice.
Thank you, Cherie. Have you shown your crystal bracelet on your blog? I'd love to see it.
Lovely, Eileen, and so meaningful. I love jewelry with a story best of all :-)
I think it's beautiful Eileen... I love all that it stands for.
I love the necklace you created Eileen! It's very modern and "green" yet has so much meaning for you. Thanks for sharing it with us!
