Fall Doily Bread Basket

When you say Thanksgiving grace, let this lovely bread bowl grace your table. After the meal, you may want to make the empty bowl a gift to someone at the table that day.

In some parts of Mexico, there is a tradition for floral centerpieces at any gathering. The host lets guests pick a scrap of folded paper from a jar or bowl. One has an “X” on it. Whoever gets the “X” takes the centerpiece home. Wouldn’t that be fun for all?

A doily bowl also makes a nice hostess gift if you will be enjoying Thanksgiving dinner at someone else’s home.

This is an old idea that my friend and fellow-crafter Shaaron has used many times over the past twenty years or so. She just dressed this one up a little more than usual. The options are many when it comes to decorating the bowl.

All you need are:

• Large crocheted doily in your choice of color
• Glass, plastic or metal bowl the size needed to fit the doily. The doily should completely cover the outside of the bowl. Consider a fancy shaped bowl for extra design dimension
• Fabric stiffener (not starch)
• Tin foil or plastic wrap
• Adornments of your choice
